Indian Films: Too Much Gore?

A new wave of hyper-violent action thrillers is sweeping across Indian cinema, with films such as 'Kill', 'Marco', and 'Animal' pushing boundaries. The recent trailer for 'Dhurandhar' has reignited discussions about whether such graphic content necessitates a more stringent R-rating system, similar to those in Western countries.

Filmmaker Sudipto Sen has voiced his support for an R-rating, stating it's crucial for protecting younger audiences in India, which he describes as being at a sensitive social crossroads. He criticizes awards given to excessively violent films and advocates for self-censorship, arguing that many filmmakers resort to sex or violence when storytelling falters.

Conversely, director Tejas Deoskar believes India does not need an R-rating, asserting that the existing 'A' certification under the CBFC is sufficient. He contends that filmmakers should retain creative liberty to depict their stories, and that audiences are discerning enough to understand the implications of an 'A' rating.
