Indian Cinema's Grand Ambitions Clash With Systemic Delays
18 Apr
Summary
- Mega projects face delays due to VFX and post-production challenges.
- Production overruns and early release date commitments disrupt the calendar.
- Ambition outpaces industry infrastructure, leading to cascading postponements.

Indian cinema is increasingly aiming for global reach with mega-projects like Ramayana and Toxic, yet faces significant internal challenges. These ambitious films are frequently delayed, not due to lack of vision, but due to systemic issues in planning and execution, particularly concerning visual effects (VFX) and post-production.
The industry's ambition has outpaced its current infrastructure. A critical bottleneck exists in VFX, with a limited pool of top-tier studios and artists competing for resources. Pre-production is often less structured than in Hollywood, with planning continuing during shooting, leading to inevitable changes and delays.
These delays create a ripple effect, disrupting the entire release calendar and impacting films of all sizes. Producer Ramesh Bala notes that a six-month delay increases costs, locks distributor capital, and leaves exhibitors with weaker alternatives, disrupting cash flow.
Furthermore, the influence of OTT platforms in dictating release dates and the pressure of financial commitments add to the inflexibility. This results in release dates being locked based on agreements rather than production readiness, exacerbating the problem when unforeseen production issues arise.
