Age Gap Casting: Bollywood's Double Standard Exposed
12 May
Summary
- Senior male stars often paired with much younger actresses.
- Actresses are frequently cast as mothers to older actors.
- Anjali Nair recently contested Kerala Assembly elections.

Indian cinema's persistent issue of age-gap casting continues to draw criticism, with senior male actors often romantically paired with actresses significantly younger. This disparity is further highlighted by the frequent casting of young actresses in maternal roles for actors older than themselves. For instance, the 2026 film 'Ustaad Bhagat Singh' featured 24-year-old Sreeleela opposite the 54-year-old Pawan Kalyan.
The trend extends to actresses playing mothers to actors considerably older. Honey Rose's role as the mother of Nandamuri Balakrishna (65) in 'Veera Simha Reddy' (2023) exemplifies this. Malayalam cinema also has a history of such casting, with veteran Kaviyoor Ponnamma playing Sathyan's mother, despite him being older. Actress Anjali Nair has also taken on maternal roles for actors older than her, such as playing the mother of Dulquer Salmaan in 'Kammatipaadam' (2016).
Anjali Nair, who began as a child artist and later debuted as a lead in Tamil cinema, has an extensive filmography across multiple languages. Beyond her acting career, she recently ventured into politics, joining the Twenty20 Party. She contested the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections from the Thrippunithura constituency, facing online trolling during her campaign. Her election affidavit declared assets worth Rs 99.75 lakh and liabilities of Rs 71.39 lakh. She secured third place in the elections.
Anjali Nair was previously married to director Aneesh Upasana, with whom she shares a daughter. She later married assistant director Ajith Raju in 2022, and they have a second daughter. Her elder daughter has also started acting as a child artist.
