Stalwarts of Indian traditional arts were recently honored with the Legends of India Lifetime Achievement Awards 2026 at a ceremony in Delhi. The awards recognized decades-long contributions to classical arts and cultural traditions. Bharatanatyam artistes, a sitar maestro, a ghatam virtuoso, a theatre practitioner, and a sculptor were among the distinguished recipients.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu presented the accolades, highlighting the awards' significance in sustaining India's civilisational inheritance. He emphasized that Indian classical arts embody the nation's history and collective memory. Sandhu called for traditions to remain dynamic, encouraging younger generations to engage with and reimagine them.
The event underscored the need for broader societal involvement in cultural preservation. Ambassador Lalit Mansingh, jury chairman, noted the awards aim to recognize both established and lesser-known living legends. The Legends of India Awards, initiated in 2002, have previously honored prominent figures in Indian arts.
