Inclusive Theatre Takes Center Stage in Mumbai

A groundbreaking production of Rabindranath Tagore's 'The Land of Cards' is being staged by young artists from The Gateway Studio in Mumbai. These performers, who have special needs, are rehearsing diligently for their upcoming show at the NMACC Bachpan children's festival. This production is significant as it is NMACC's first developed, produced, and presented entirely by young artistes with special needs.

The Gateway Studio, an initiative of The Gateway School of Mumbai, uses theatre to equip students with essential life skills like communication, confidence, and emotional regulation. For many, like former student Farhan Dabhoiwala, theatre has been transformative, opening pathways into the industry through internships. The studio actively advocates for inclusive theatre practices throughout Mumbai.

Inclusive theatre encompasses diversity in themes, formats, casts, and venues. To achieve this, adaptations are made, such as simplifying scripts and using music for line memorization, as done with 'The Land of Cards.'

Adaptations extend to the performance environment. Measures like color-coded floor markers, visual cues, lapel microphones, softened lighting, and even sunglasses have been employed to support performers. Director Quasar Thakore-Padamsee highlights the need for theatre venues to provide backstage and on-stage infrastructural modifications to accommodate diverse needs.

Beyond infrastructure, audience perception is crucial. Audiences are encouraged to be supportive, understanding that performers may make mistakes. The emergence of inclusive theatre in Mumbai signals a new era, fostering a space where mixed-ability individuals can create and share unique stories.
