At a recent fan meet-up in Mumbai, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali became teary-eyed while sharing a little-known anecdote about his 2015 film Tamasha. He revealed for the first time that the protagonist's name, Ved, was inspired by his late childhood friend, Ved Vardhan Tripathi.
Ali recounted how Ved, who had moved from England, was the only friend he made during his shy school years, providing him with a sense of safety and happiness. He expressed his emotional difficulty in understanding his friend's struggles with alcohol addiction and his untimely death.
Further recalling his encounters with Ved, Ali mentioned meeting him occasionally, even during the shooting of Love Aaj Kal in London. He later met Ved's family after Tamasha's release, which prompted him to realize the profound connection behind naming the character Ved, processing deep-seated emotions.
