Ilkley is preparing a bid to be recognized as the United Kingdom's first Town of Culture. This initiative aims to highlight the town's vibrant arts and creative scene. The competition, launched by the government in January, offers a significant £3m prize to develop a cultural program in 2028, with runners-up receiving £250,000.
Led by Ilkley Business Improvement District and supported by the Town Council, the bid emphasizes Ilkley's strong cultural identity. Mayor Councillor Jane Gibson noted the town's history of collaboration and community pride in delivering projects. The town already hosts an annual literature festival and boasts active theatre venues and youth initiatives.
Sarah Brookfield-Almond, manager of Ilkley BID, stated that despite its size, Ilkley has an exceptional cultural reputation. She cited events like the Beer Festival and the Half Marathon as examples of community spirit. Other towns in Yorkshire, including Barnsley, Whitby, and Halifax, are also competing.
The Town of Culture contest runs alongside the existing UK City of Culture, with Bradford being the 2025 winner. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy highlighted the competition's potential to benefit local communities.
