In a highly anticipated auction, one of the most iconic props from the beloved film The Wizard of Oz is set to go under the hammer. The Wicked Witch's black wool hat, which measures 14 inches high with a 19.5-inch diameter brim, is expected to fetch a hefty price from devoted fans and collectors.
The hat, designed by renowned costume designer Gilbert Adrian, was an integral part of the Wicked Witch's transformation on screen. As Joe Maddalena, executive vice president of Heritage Auctions, explains, "When the Wicked Witch becomes the Wicked Witch, she puts on the hat. So it's this transformational moment of the birth of the witch. I think the importance of the hat is just incredible."
The hat is not the only Oz-related item up for auction. Also available are a copy of L. Frank Baum's original The Wizard of Oz book, signed and inscribed by Judy Garland and other cast members, as well as a right-foot ruby slipper worn by Garland during rehearsals and an organza blouse she wore on screen.
The auction comes at a time of renewed interest in the classic fantasy film, with the recent openings of Wicked: For Good globally and the immersive AI-enhanced version of The Wizard of Oz at Sphere. For Oz enthusiasts, this is a rare opportunity to own a piece of cinematic history.
