In 2025, the beloved crime-fighting canine known as Rex is set to return to his roots in Vienna, Austria. Production is currently underway on "Rex - Vienna Calling," a new series that will see the world's most successful TV dog detective team up with his partner, Detective Max Steiner, to solve even the hardest cases in the Austrian capital.
The original "Rex - A Cop's Best Friend" series first premiered in Vienna in 1994, starring Tobias Moretti as the first "dog dad" detective. Over the past three decades, the show has become a global phenomenon, inspiring numerous international adaptations that have collectively amassed over 750 episodes. From North America's "Hudson & Rex" to Italy's "Il Commissario Rex" and Poland's "Komisarz Alex," the Rex franchise has captivated audiences around the world with its unique blend of crime-solving and canine companionship.
Now, the iconic four-legged detective is coming back home to Vienna, where he will team up with Detective Max Steiner, played by Maximilian Brückner, to tackle a new set of thrilling cases. Together with Max's colleague Felix Burger, the crime-fighting duo will face challenges ranging from a high-rise bomb threat to a spectacular diamond robbery, all while showcasing Rex's sharp instincts and astonishing intelligence. The new series, produced by MR Film in co-production with Seven.One and ORF, is set to air in 2026 on Austria's ORF and Germany's SAT.1 channels, as well as on the digital platform Joyn.
