Last month, the 31st Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) hosted a special screening of the newly 4K restored version of Bimal Roy's classic film 'Do Bigha Zamin'. The event was introduced by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, director of the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), along with the children of Bimal Roy, Joy Bimal Roy and Aparajita Roy Sinha.
Attendees were visibly moved by the restoration, which brought unprecedented clarity and vibrancy to the film's iconic visuals. Many remarked on how the restored version captured the emotional depth of the story even more powerfully than before. "Watching it in 4K felt like seeing it for the first time," said Ritika Sen, a young cinephile from Kolkata, adding that "the struggles of the farmer, his hopes and despair... it hits you even harder today."
The screening was part of a series of curated restored classics, with FHF emphasizing the importance of film preservation in keeping India's cinematic history alive. "Every frame we preserve is a piece of our cultural memory," noted Shivendra Singh Dungarpur. "Seeing the audience react with such emotion today reminds us why this work matters."
