Hungry Hippo Terror Unleashed in Bayou
27 May
Summary
- Hippos kill more humans annually than many apex predators.
- Practical animatronic hippo prop named Nancy was used.
- The film was shot in a constructed swamp tank in Malta.

The film 'Hungry' brings the often-underestimated danger of the hippopotamus to the forefront of a survival thriller. Despite their placid appearance, hippos are exceptionally dangerous, responsible for more human deaths each year than many commonly feared predators. This new movie explores their menace within the unique setting of the Louisiana bayou.
Director James Nunn employed practical effects, including a large animatronic hippo prop called Nancy, to create realistic encounters. This physical prop, operated by a team of five, helped elicit genuine performances from the cast facing the creature. The production team also constructed a "swamp tank" in Malta to simulate the bayou environment.
This controlled setting allowed for safe and effective filming of the practical hippo effects. The cast and crew found joy in the old-school filmmaking approach, working with the giant prop in the artificial swamp. 'Hungry' is set to release on June 3 in theaters and on VOD on June 23.
