Sci-fi Doc Explores Earth's Lost Secrets

Filmmaker Susanne Brandstaetter's new documentary, 'Hungry,' premieres at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The film presents a unique sci-fi narrative where a mysterious Being arrives on a human-less Earth to investigate the causes of mankind's extinction.

Utilizing voice recordings from scientists and activists, the documentary explores problematic trends in food, environment, business, and politics that led to ecological collapse. It highlights connections between food security, labor markets, and the global decline of democracy.

Brandstaetter aimed to challenge the notion of inevitable extinction, emphasizing that the film carries a positive and empowering message. Despite its dystopian visuals, 'Hungry' is intended to inspire action and demonstrate that positive change is still possible.

Filmed in Austria, Germany, Spain, the United States, and Malaysia, the documentary features haunting imagery of desolate landscapes. The director intentionally left the film's time setting open-ended for audience interpretation.

Brandstaetter's next project is a documentary about youths with a migration background in Vienna, tentatively titled 'What About Me?'.
