The Hunger Games franchise, which began with its first film in 2012 and has since expanded with 2023's "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" and the upcoming "Sunrise on the Reaping," saw Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth ultimately cast as Katniss, Peeta, and Gale, respectively. Director Gary Ross described the casting of this trio as "easy decisions."
However, numerous other actors were considered for these pivotal roles. Saoirse Ronan, Hailee Steinfeld, Zoey Deutch, Shailene Woodley, Emma Roberts, Emily Browning, and others auditioned for Katniss. Steinfeld reflected that she doesn't dwell on missed opportunities, believing everything happens for a reason, and later starred as Kate Bishop in Marvel's "Hawkeye."
For the role of Peeta, actors such as Evan Peters, Hunter Parrish, Lucas Till, and Austin Butler were in contention. Peters and Till eventually acted alongside Jennifer Lawrence in the X-Men film series. Similarly, David Henrie, Drew Roy, and Robbie Amell screen-tested for the part of Gale before Liam Hemsworth was cast.
Beyond the main trio, other significant near misses included Kristin Chenoweth for Effie, John C. Reilly for Haymitch, Garrett Hedlund and Taylor Kitsch for Finnick, Mia Wasikowska for Johanna, and Tony Shalhoub for Beetee. Many of these actors, despite not joining The Hunger Games, achieved considerable recognition in other popular movies and television shows.
