The Housemaid Novel Becomes Stage Play Sensation

Lionsgate is bringing Freida McFadden's bestselling psychological thriller, 'The Housemaid,' to the stage. This development comes after the 2025 film adaptation, starring Sydney Sweeney, achieved significant box office success, earning nearly $400 million globally.

The stage production is being created in collaboration with producers Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska of Melting Pot. Bekah Brunstetter, a Tony Award nominee for 'The Notebook,' is attached to write the play.

Published in 2022, 'The Housemaid' centers on Millie, a young woman who uncovers dark secrets while working for the wealthy Winchester family. The novel's popularity spurred a trilogy, with 'The Housemaid's Secret' (2023) and 'The Housemaid Is Watching' (2024) also becoming bestsellers, collectively selling millions of copies worldwide.

Lionsgate sees the stage adaptation as a natural fit for the story's tension and twists. "The Housemaid has all the elements for a successful stage adaptation - a blockbuster title, compelling characters, and a story full of twists and turns that builds tension and momentum in a way that naturally lends itself to the stage," stated Jenefer Brown, Lionsgate's President of Global Products & Experiences.

This theatrical venture is the latest expansion for the 'Housemaid' franchise. Lionsgate also confirmed that 'The Housemaid's Secret' is slated for production later this year, with a planned theatrical release on December 17, 2027. Lionsgate has been actively expanding its intellectual properties into live entertainment, including 'The Hunger Games: On Stage' and a North American tour of 'Dirty Dancing'. A Broadway-bound musical adaptation of 'La La Land' is also in development.
