The recent season premiere of House of the Dragon has confirmed the apparent exclusion of the character Nettles, a development that has divided fans. In the show's narrative, Rhaena has bonded with and ridden the dragon Sheepstealer, a plot point that deviates from George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood novel. In the book, Sheepstealer is bonded to Nettles, who is also notable as the novel's only canonically Black character and a female dragonrider outside the Targaryen line.

This adaptation choice has led to significant backlash from viewers, with many expressing their dissatisfaction online. Criticisms focus on the removal of what they consider an important and compelling character. The situation has been exacerbated by reported disagreements between author George R.R. Martin and showrunner Ryan Condal regarding the series' creative direction. Martin has publicly voiced his disapproval of changes made in subsequent seasons, detailing a breakdown in their collaborative relationship.

Condal, however, has explained that while he values Martin's input, practical considerations necessitate certain adjustments to the narrative for the series' production. He noted that Martin became unwilling to acknowledge these practical issues, leading to a strained working relationship. Despite these creative tensions, new episodes of House of the Dragon continue to be released Sundays on HBO and HBO Max.
