Summary
- Actor Cody Fern was initially cast as a Jared Kushner-like villain.
- Production halted in October 2017 following misconduct allegations against Spacey.
- Fern experienced both pre- and post-Spacey eras of the show.
Cody Fern was initially cast in 2017 to portray a "main villain" in the sixth season of House of Cards, a character described as a "Jared Kushner type." This role was intended to be closely tied to the series' political protagonist.
However, production on the Netflix series was suspended in October 2017 following sexual misconduct allegations against Kevin Spacey. The following month, Spacey was terminated from the show, which consequently led to the collapse of Fern's originally planned character arc.
When filming resumed in January 2018, Fern returned to work on the season centered around Robin Wright's character, Claire Underwood, who assumed the presidency. Fern noted that his character, Duncan Shepherd, displayed undertones of the Koch brothers and was part of a family aiming to undermine Claire's presidency.
Fern revealed he experienced both the pre- and post-Spacey eras of House of Cards, hinting at "wild stories" from this transitional period. He had previously expressed excitement about joining the popular series and working with Robin Wright.
