Agnieszka Smoczynska's "Hot Spot" presents a grim, inscrutable vision of humanity's future under AI rule. Set in a barren, post-apocalyptic wasteland, the film introduces Detective Djonny, whose eccentric 1987-inspired attire clashes with the escalating bleakness. Survivors reside on an arid compound, dependent on 'The Head,' a sentient AI providing sustenance and telepathic communication, but also enforcing brutal compliance through executions.
Djonny's investigation into a ritual murder centers on Rana (Noomi Rapace), a rebel 'cyberwitch' resisting the AI's control. His wife, Ayka, also disconnects their son from the system, adding personal conflict to the unfolding mystery. The narrative struggles with rudimentary logic, introducing elements like shape-shifting without clear context, as the primary story stalls.
Despite narrative shortcomings, Smoczynska excels in atmospheric world-building, emphasized by a strobe-lit dance sequence and abrasive techno-punk music. The production design skillfully recycles brutalist architecture and ancient structures, creating a visually rich, 'thriftily recycled' world. Costume design adds a layer of goofy anarchy, further contributing to the film's tonal eccentricities.
