Diana Sanchez has been appointed president of the renowned Hot Docs documentary film festival in Toronto, effective immediately. In her new role, Sanchez will steer the organization's strategic direction, including artistic oversight and business development. Mara Gourd-Mercado joins Hot Docs as executive director, a position she assumes on October 19. Gourd-Mercado, formerly of CPH:DOX, will manage the festival's day-to-day operations and fiscal responsibilities.
These leadership transitions follow a period of financial challenges and governance adjustments for Hot Docs. Sanchez's promotion aims to build a robust foundation for the festival's future. Gourd-Mercado's responsibilities will include fundraising and industry programming, with a focus on revitalizing the Hot Docs Forum and strengthening ties with the Francophone documentary community.
Both Sanchez and Gourd-Mercado bring extensive international experience. Sanchez previously oversaw Latin American cinema at TIFF and directed the Panama Film Festival. Gourd-Mercado, a native of Montreal, aims to enhance Hot Docs' showcase of global stories, particularly from Latin America. The festival's 2027 edition is scheduled for April 23 to May 2.
