Christopher Lee's "Horror of Dracula" from 1958 is returning to cinemas in a meticulously restored 4K version, timed for the upcoming Halloween season. This release marks the rediscovery of footage that was initially removed by censors due to its graphic and sensual content.
The unearthed scenes, found in a Warner Bros. warehouse, include moments deemed too gory for audiences in the late 1950s, such as the vampire's intense lunges and the visceral depiction of his demise. Notably, the film introduced the iconic fangs associated with vampires, a visual innovation attributed to Christopher Lee and Hammer's makeup department.
This version will also be available on home entertainment, with dates yet to be announced. The restoration aims to present the film as director Terence Fisher originally intended, including over three minutes of previously missing material that showcases the film's boundary-pushing gore and explicit nature.
John Gore, owner of the Hammer Horror Films label, expressed excitement about honoring the brand's legacy by digging into its extensive catalog. The restoration, overseen by Silver Salt Restoration, ensures that audiences can experience this classic horror film with enhanced visual quality.
