Glamour Fades: Hollywood Stars Tarnished by Neglect

The once-glamorous Hollywood Walk of Fame is experiencing significant physical neglect. Historians and locals observe that many of the 2,852 brass stars are now dirty, cracked, and covered in grime. The surrounding commercial center is characterized by discount souvenir shops, aggressive street presence, persistent trash, and unpleasant odors, contributing to an overall feeling of disrepair.

This decline is inextricably linked to the broader deterioration of Hollywood itself, with some experts noting that parts of the area are now considered unsafe. The cost of obtaining a star has also dramatically increased, from $2,000 historically to $85,000, reflecting a potential shift in focus from preservation to revenue.

Despite these challenges, the Walk of Fame continues to honor new inductees, with approximately 33 individuals selected each year from various entertainment categories. Notable recent selections for the Class of 2027 include Idris Elba, Elle and Dakota Fanning, Kate Hudson, and Ted Sarandos. The Walk of Fame still attracts millions of visitors annually, estimated between 5 to 6 million in recent years.
