International cinema is drawing Hollywood stars seeking greater creative freedom, a trend spurred by challenges within the American independent film sector.
A significant recent development is Neon's acquisition of U.S. distribution rights for Ryusuke Hamaguchi's French film "All of a Sudden." This deal, reportedly in the seven-figure range, was one of the first major transactions at the European Film Market. The film, which shot in Paris, stars Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto.
"All of a Sudden" tells the story of a nursing home director in Paris who adopts a unconventional method and finds her life transformed by a terminally ill Japanese playwright. The narrative is loosely based on published correspondence between a philosopher with terminal cancer and a medical anthropologist. Cinefrance is handling international sales, with distribution deals already secured for Germany, Austria, and Benelux, and further distribution planned for France and Japan.
