Hollywood's top content creators, including Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Neon, and FilmNation, have agreed to new policies supporting career producers. These companies will now provide essential healthcare protection and upfront development fees, responding to requests from Producers United. This collective advocates for the rights of individuals who find material, supervise production, and deliver films and TV shows.
This development follows similar commitments from major entities like Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney, Paramount, Universal, and Netflix. Producers United was formed to combat the "systemic degradation" of their role and the erosion of profit participation in the streaming era. However, Amazon MGM, Apple, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and A24 have not yet complied with these producer demands.
Under the new agreements, Lionsgate, Neon, and FilmNation will contribute to healthcare plans, offering producers either coverage or equivalent reimbursement. Development fees, also known as "commencement wages," will now be paid in tiers based on script completion and project progress, updating a long-stagnant fee structure from the early 1970s.
