Digital Scripts Slash Hollywood's Paper Waste
22 Apr
Summary
- Scriptation software digitizes scripts, reducing paper waste.
- Users eliminated over 120 million sheets of paper since 2023.
- The industry is slowly evolving, with paper as a main competitor.

Hollywood is significantly reducing its paper waste thanks to Scriptation, a digital scripting software co-created by Steve Vitolo. Launched in 2016 and gaining traction during the COVID shutdown, Scriptation allows actors, directors, and crews to annotate scripts digitally, migrating notes to revised versions. This innovation has led to the elimination of over 120 million sheets of paper from production sets worldwide between April 2023 and April 2024.
The environmental impact is substantial, with last year's savings alone equating to over 5,700 trees preserved and millions of gallons of water conserved. Scriptation also offers users a personal 'Green Impact Report' to track their savings. Despite successes and endorsements from major figures and productions like Michael B. Jordan and 'Saturday Night Live,' paper remains the primary competitor, as the industry evolves slowly.
Vitolo's approach focuses on demonstrating the benefits of digital tools, making them the obvious choice for an industry accustomed to traditional paper scripts. Scriptation has also expanded its reach through guilds, industry organizations, and partnerships like Green Rider, a U.K.-based sustainability movement. A pledge aims to make Hollywood paperless by 2030.
