Thirteen years after the original "Victorious" concluded, Netflix is revisiting the iconic Hollywood Arts school with a new spinoff, "Hollywood Arts." Created by Jake Farrow and Samantha Martin, the series centers on Trina Vega, portrayed by Daniella Monet, who reprises her role.
Trina, facing career stagnation and weary of relying on her sister Tori, returns to Hollywood Arts to substitute teach. Despite lacking formal qualifications, she discovers she can inspire a new cohort of aspiring performers through her unconventional teaching style. The series echoes the charm of its predecessor, aiming to capture the interest of Gen Alpha.
The first season of 12 episodes begins with Mr. Sikowitz's sudden retirement. Principal Helen introduces Trina to her new class, which includes ambitious students like Qwest, Oscar, Emmy (Techie), and frenemies Jen and Pepper. The teens are eager for details about Tori, but Trina offers little insight into the industry.
"Hollywood Arts" is a light-hearted sitcom, reminiscent of early 2000s Nickelodeon and Disney Channel fare. It presents a more relatable adult figure in Trina, a stylish thirtysomething still pursuing her dreams, a trope rarely seen in children's television. This focus on navigating life's unpredictability offers a fresh perspective.
Despite its over-the-top performances, the cast, including standout singer Emmy Liu-Wang, demonstrates considerable talent. The ensemble collaborates effectively. "Hollywood Arts" fills a niche for younger audiences not yet ready for young adult series, offering a silly, idealized high school experience while depicting a more realistic adulthood.
