Hollywood Embraces AI: New Skills Emerge Amid Job Fears
14 Feb
Summary
- A surge of Hollywood professionals are retraining in AI filmmaking.
- Online school Curious Refuge has trained 10,000 students.
- Generative AI could impact 120,000 jobs in film and animation.

Amidst industry shifts and production slowdowns, many Hollywood workers are proactively retraining in artificial intelligence to secure their careers. Michael Eng, a visual-effects artist sidelined by recent industry challenges, enrolled in Curious Refuge, an online institution specializing in AI-powered filmmaking. This move reflects a broader trend where professionals are adapting to generative technology's growing influence on film and television production.
Curious Refuge, founded in 2020, has become a significant training hub, attracting 10,000 students globally. Co-founders report that 95% of their current enrollment consists of entertainment and advertising professionals eager to upskill. The school offers courses in 11 languages, catering to a worldwide student base eager to leverage AI tools for new career prospects, as demonstrated by Petra Molnar's successful transition into advertising.
While generative AI promises innovation and new creative avenues, it also raises concerns. A 2024 study predicts that approximately 120,000 jobs in film, television, and animation could be consolidated or eliminated by the end of the year due to AI. However, experts like Chris Jacquemin from WME talent agency suggest that alongside job displacement, AI will also foster job creation and a new generation of storytellers.
To address the evolving landscape, established educational institutions and major film schools are integrating generative AI into their curriculums. Curious Refuge was acquired by AI entertainment studio Promise in February 2025, positioning it as a talent pipeline for AI-focused creative roles. This acquisition highlights the increasing demand for talent skilled in AI production techniques as Hollywood increasingly embraces these technologies.
