Oscar Race Heats Up: HollyShorts Doc Nominees Revealed

The 22nd HollyShorts Film Festival in Los Angeles will announce its jury award winners on Sunday, with four categories offering Oscar qualifications. The festival's documentary program is particularly noted for its diverse and compelling narratives.

Among the contenders are films focusing on the formerly incarcerated. "I Got My Brother" follows siblings Jarrett and Baylon Harper, detailing their challenging past in the foster care system and Jarrett's eventual release from a life sentence. "The Second Life of Freddie Nole" chronicles Freddie Nole's transition after 50 years in prison and his subsequent founding of a nonprofit aiding ex-offenders.

Other highlighted documentaries include "The Time My Grandmother Was Held Hostage by Bank Robbers," which recounts a 1983 incident in Montreal and features an interview with one of the perpetrators. "When The Revolution Doesn't Come" examines the experiences of children of Black Panther Party leaders, exploring how they carry forward the movement's ideals.

"The Chimney Sweeper" by Jack Raese centers on a woodcarver contemplating his family legacy. The festival also screened notable works like Ben Proudfoot's "The Baddest Speech Writer of All" and Joshua Oppenheimer's "The Revolution Against Death."

Additionally, HollyShorts features sports documentaries such as "ZINA," produced by Serena Williams, about tennis pioneer Zina Garrison, and "Set Pace," about Britain's first Black female motorsport official. The festival runs through Sunday at the TCL Chinese Theatres and Ovation Hollywood.
