Filmmaker Vinod Kapri's acclaimed Himalayan love story, 'Pyre,' is set to release in cinemas across India on October 23. The film was inspired by an elderly couple Kapri met in Uttarakhand in 2018, whose conversation about survival and their goats deeply resonated with him. This encounter became the emotional core of the narrative, exploring the quiet lives of an aging couple in a remote Kumaon village.
'Pyre' focuses on the emotional landscape of parents left behind as younger generations migrate for opportunities. Kapri's intention was to explore what old age looks like when villages grow emptier. The lead roles are played by local Uttarakhand residents, 80-year-old Padam Singh Kapri and 70-year-old Heera Devi, who brought authentic rhythms and deep silences to their characters.
The film has garnered significant international acclaim, premiering at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and winning 18 awards, including 15 Best Film honours. With music by Mychael Danna and lyrics by Gulzar, 'Pyre' aims to connect with Indian audiences by portraying the universal feeling of missing children and a quieter world.
