Fifth Season has secured the rights to adapt Gabriel Bergmoser's 2025 thriller novel, "High Rise," into a feature film. The adaptation will be penned by the bestselling Australian author himself and directed by Patrick Hughes, reuniting him with Hidden Pictures and Huge Film after their collaboration on the Netflix hit "War Machine."
The film is described as a blend of "Die Hard" and "The Raid." It centers on a disavowed ex-cop who seeks out his estranged daughter in a notorious high-rise, only to discover she does not wish to be rescued by him. Their reunion is violently interrupted when the city's criminal element targets the building, creating a dangerous situation for both.
Together, the father and daughter must fight their way through fifteen floors of escalating threats. Hidden Pictures' Todd Lieberman and Alex Young, along with Huge Film's Patrick Hughes and Greg McLean, are producing the project. Both production companies expressed enthusiasm for continuing their partnership and supporting Australian talent.
Bergmoser, a Melbourne-based author, has a growing list of successful thrillers and novels. His 2020 bestseller "The Hunted" is also slated for a film adaptation. Hughes, known for directing action films like "The Hitman's Bodyguard" and "The Expendables 3," recently saw "War Machine" achieve significant viewership on Netflix.
