Heywood Civic, a prominent town centre theatre in Greater Manchester, has officially reopened to the public following a six-year closure for a significant redevelopment. The building underwent a £6.3m refurbishment, which included the addition of a glass-fronted extension, a new cafe and bar in the reception area, upgraded dressing rooms for performers, and retractable seating within the main auditorium.
This major renovation enables the theatre to attract a more diverse and high-caliber programme of events, including music, comedy, and drama productions that were previously beyond its capacity. Alongside weekend live events, the venue will host weekday activities such as a youth theatre academy, toddler groups, and tea dances.
The redevelopment project, initiated in 2024, received substantial funding with £696k from Arts Council England and £5.6m from Rochdale Borough Council. This initiative is part of a broader town centre regeneration effort, which has already seen improvements to Peine Square and upcoming enhancements to local roads and pathways.
In recent years, the theatre was utilized as a Coronavirus testing centre during lockdowns. However, prior to the redevelopment, the venue faced challenges in securing bookings due to its deteriorating condition. The reopening marks a significant milestone for cultural activity and community well-being in Heywood.
