In July 2022, a group of courageous bus drivers in Texas traversed dangerous roadways to rescue hundreds of children stranded during deadly flash floods. The drivers, including teachers and school staff, sprang into action when the Kerrville school district superintendent put out a call for help.
Within 10-15 minutes, the drivers had responded and were on their way to pick up children from Camp Mystic, which saw 27 girls and counselors killed in the flood. The drivers described a harrowing scene, with one recounting how the children on her bus chose to comfort each other by singing Christian songs during the evacuation.
In total, the drivers rescued 900 children who were stranded due to the floods. Kelly Clarkson, a Texas native, was visibly moved as she interviewed the drivers on her talk show, praising them as "heroes" for their selfless actions.
The community is still recovering from the devastating impact of the floods, which killed at least 135 people. The school district superintendent says they are focused on providing counseling and support to affected families, as well as ensuring all 5,000 local students receive backpacks and school supplies to ease the burden on parents.
