Couple Raised Bear Cub to Hollywood Stardom

A new documentary reveals the remarkable story of Maggie and Andy Robin, a Scottish couple who raised a bear cub named Hercules as their son. For 25 years, they shared their lives with the brown bear, who they bought for £50 in 1974. Hercules grew to be an 8ft tall, 65-stone gentle giant, even sharing meals and drinks with his adoptive parents. The couple's unique bond with Hercules is described as a profound love story.

Herc ules's extraordinary life led him to international fame, including a role opposite Roger Moore in the 1983 James Bond film 'Octopussy' and a Kleenex commercial. His disappearance during the filming of this advert in the Outer Hebrides in 1980 captivated the nation, sparking a massive search. He was eventually found 24 days later, significantly lighter, after a dramatic rescue.

The documentary also touches on Andy Robin's passing in 2019 and Maggie's reflections on their life with Hercules. The bear, who was voted Personality of the Year by the Scottish Tourist Board in 1980, passed away in 2000 due to illness. A statue was later erected in his honor, and Andy Robin was laid to rest beside his beloved "big fella."
