Summary
- Sutherland museum and arts venue Timespan proposes £8m redevelopment.
- Extensions aim to provide new gallery and museum spaces.
- Project expected to take five to six years to complete.

A museum and arts venue in Helmsdale, Sutherland, established nearly 40 years ago, is contemplating an £8 million redevelopment. Currently situated on a former herring curing yard, Timespan's operators believe the venue has become too small for its exhibits and planned activities.
The proposed plans involve adding extensions to house new gallery and museum spaces. These improvements are intended to better accommodate the venue's offerings and address issues such as inadequate heating and restrictive corridor sizes.
Helmsdale, a village on the east Sutherland coast with a history tied to the Highland Clearances and the herring industry, would see its Timespan venue significantly enhanced. The project, developed by architects Assemble and Office Corr Higgins, has seen three consultations held.
Timespan's leadership is still working on securing planning permission and raising the necessary funds for the £8 million cost. They estimate the entire project could take between five and six years to finish.
