Summary
- Roar, Heath Ledger's first series, premiered on Fox in 1997.
- Despite good ratings, the show was canceled after eight episodes.
- The series helped launch Ledger's career and led to other roles.
Heath Ledger's acting journey began with the 1997 Fox series Roar, where he played a young Celtic prince. The show, set in 400 A.D. Ireland, aimed to unite tribes against Roman rule using mystical elements. Despite attracting 8 million viewers early on, Fox canceled Roar after airing just eight of its 13 filmed episodes.
Production for Roar reportedly cost $1.3 million per hour. Creative differences plagued the series, leading to shifting tones and concepts. Star Sebastian Roché suggested competition from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" contributed to its demise. Calista Flockhart's "Ally McBeal" later debuted in its place.
Though short-lived, Roar proved pivotal for Ledger, opening doors in America and securing him a role in "The Patriot." The remaining five episodes of Roar eventually aired in 2000.
