A highly anticipated limited series focusing on Elon Musk's pioneering space company, SpaceX, will not move forward at HBO. The project, which had been in development for five years, was officially declared dead by biographer Ashlee Vance. Vance shared his disappointment on the X platform, noting that while they had developed "smart and funny" scripts, Hollywood's complexities and HBO's organizational shifts led to the cancellation.
Vance is now seeking other opportunities to bring the story of SpaceX's formative years to the screen. He mentioned that intellectual property rights for his biography have reverted to him, and he is open to serious offers from potential producers. The series was intended to dramatize the meticulous work of engineers handpicked by Musk to build and launch the first manned SpaceX rocket, the Falcon 9.
The HBO announcement for the limited series was made in October 2020, with Channing Tatum's production company attached. The narrative was set to follow the critical period of developing and successfully launching the Falcon 9 rocket into orbit on May 30, 2020, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of early space exploration.
