HB Studio, a cornerstone of acting education for 67 years, is preparing to close its long-standing Greenwich Village residence. The venerable institution, co-founded by Herbert Berghof and Uta Hagen, has signed an agreement to sell its three-building complex on Bank Street to a private buyer for more than $10 million. This sale is subject to state approval.
The school, established in 1945 by Viennese actor Herbert Berghof, has been a nurturing ground for countless actors. Notable alumni include Robert De Niro, Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Sigourney Weaver, and Sarah Jessica Parker. The acquisition of the Bank Street property in 1959 was a significant achievement, transforming a former warehouse into a dedicated space for artistic development, free from commercial pressures.
HB Studio plans to find a new home within Manhattan and continue its mission. Educational programs are expected to run at the current Bank Street location through next summer, allowing students to complete their training. The school aims to maintain its legacy of fostering theatrical talent in a new setting.
