Hawkeye Star Shares Secrets of Avengers: Endgame's Emotional Sacrifice Scene
12 Nov
Summary
- Natasha Romanoff's sacrifice on Vormir was initially planned as a "galactic" battle
- Changes were made to make the scene more intimate between Natasha and Clint
- Jeremy Renner, the actor behind Hawkeye, is glad they went with the simpler approach

According to Avengers: Endgame star Jeremy Renner, the film's heartbreaking Vormir sequence was initially conceived as a large-scale, "galactic" skirmish before the filmmakers decided to scale it down. Renner, who plays Hawkeye, shared this behind-the-scenes nugget during a recent Space Con 2025 panel.
The actor explained that Marvel had initially planned for Thanos' forces to crash the party on Vormir, leading to a chaotic battle as Black Widow sprinted through blaster fire before making the soul-for-a-soul leap. However, the filmmakers ultimately opted for a more intimate, two-friends-on-a-cliff goodbye between Natasha and Clint.
Renner says this simpler approach landed the emotional beat the filmmakers were chasing. The theatrical Vormir sequence narrows to just the two friends wrestling over who gets to make the sacrifice play, with no armies or cavalry in sight. This quiet devastation, Renner believes, is more powerful than the originally planned spectacle.
The Russo brothers and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have previously discussed how Endgame's biggest deaths work best when the movie goes quiet. And Renner's comments suggest the team knew exactly what they were doing in crafting Natasha's heartbreaking farewell.
