The Harwich Redoubt, a significant 19th-century coastal defence fort in Essex, is set to undergo essential repairs thanks to a substantial funding package exceeding £360,000. This Grade II*-listed structure was originally constructed to protect against potential Napoleonic invasions.
Following its inclusion on Historic England's at-risk register in 2020, the fort has been suffering from leaks and overgrown vegetation. Historic England has contributed £119,212, while the National Lottery Heritage Fund has provided a significant £246,538 towards the restoration efforts.
Andy Schooler, chairman of the Harwich Society, which manages the historic monument, expressed enthusiasm for the funding. He stated it would facilitate critical repair work and create new avenues for the public to learn about and actively participate in the fort's upkeep and management.
