Actress sues Harvard's theater for permanent hair loss
20 Feb
Summary
- Actress alleges permanent hair loss from unqualified stylist.
- Claim states white actors received qualified stylists.
- Lawsuit seeks damages for emotional distress and job loss.

Nike Imoru, a Black actress, has initiated legal action against Harvard University's American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) alleging racial discrimination. Imoru contends that during the 2025 production of 'The Odyssey,' she sustained permanent scalp damage and lost approximately 90% of her hair because a backstage worker, rather than a licensed professional, styled her hair.
Imoru asserts that this situation violated her contract with the Actors' Equity Association and created a stark contrast to the treatment of white actors, who she claims were given qualified hairstylists. The complaint details the intense pain she endured and her subsequent inability to sleep due to the tight cornrows installed.
She is suing for emotional damages, citing that the hair loss has been permanent and has impacted her confidence, leading her to quit acting entirely. The lawsuit also notes that Imoru has lost job opportunities as a direct result of her hair condition. The A.R.T. has not yet responded to requests for comment.
