Veteran Actor Hal Williams, Known for 'Smitty,' Dies at 91

Veteran actor Hal Williams, celebrated for his role as Officer 'Smitty' Smith on the classic sitcom Sanford and Son, died recently at his home in Rancho Mirage. He was 91 years old.

Williams was one half of a beloved comedic crimefighting duo on Sanford and Son, often providing humorous interpretations of official police explanations. His contributions to the show were significant, and the characters' schtick originated during rehearsals.

His acting career, which spanned nearly six decades, included notable roles in "On the Rocks," "Private Benjamin," and "227." Williams also made guest appearances on many popular television series and appeared in films like "Hardcore" and "Guess Who."

Beyond his acting, Williams was a dedicated board member of the Los Angeles Actors' Theatre and established a scholarship foundation for students of color pursuing television and communications degrees, honoring his late son.
