Ethiopian director Haile Gerima is set to receive the Berlinale Camera at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival. The prestigious award ceremony will take place on February 17, 2026.
Gerima's latest film, "Black Lions - Roman Wolves," a comprehensive study of Italian colonialism and Ethiopian resistance, is scheduled for its world premiere within the Berlinale Forum. This nearly nine-hour work is a significant new contribution from the acclaimed filmmaker.
Born in Ethiopia, Gerima emigrated to the United States in 1967 and became a pivotal figure in the L.A. Rebellion movement. This collective championed an independent Black American cinema.
His extensive filmography includes "Harvest: 3,000 Years," "Bush Mama," "Ashes and Embers," "Sankofa," and "Teza." These films are celebrated for their blend of personal, historical, and political narratives, reflecting his deep connection to his Ethiopian heritage.
The Berlinale Camera has been awarded since 1986 to individuals and institutions making significant contributions to cinema, recognizing those with whom the festival shares a special bond.
