The production team behind "Hacks" embarked on a creative challenge to recreate a fictional 1970s sitcom set, "Who's Making Dinner?," for a PaleyFest celebration. Drawing inspiration from classics like "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "All in the Family," the set design featured a color palette of avocado, orange, and cream, with wood paneling. The crucial living room couch was discovered on Facebook Marketplace, while other set elements, such as doors and pass-throughs, were sourced from the "Will and Grace" archives.
Later in the series, this set was updated to appear contemporary for Ava's storyline. Another significant undertaking involved staging Deborah's publicity stunt, where she was suspended in a Plexiglas cube above the Las Vegas Strip. This complex sequence required building a section of the Las Vegas Strip on a soundstage to simulate a blackout, as shutting down the actual Strip was impossible. The cube itself was an engineered steel and Plexiglas structure, custom-made and approved for safety.
