Born Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone on July 9, 1925, Guru Dutt left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. He began his directorial career with 'Baazi' in 1951, subsequently helming a series of enduring films like 'Aar Paar', 'Mr. & Mrs. '55', and 'CID'.
Though films like 'Pyaasa' and 'Kaagaz Ke Phool' were not immediate commercial hits, they have since been recognized as masterpieces of Indian cinema. These films also introduced audiences to memorable songs, with music by S.D. Burman and O.P. Nayyar, and sung by Mohammed Rafi and Geeta Dutt.
Guru Dutt's personal life included a marriage to singer Geeta Dutt and a notable professional association with actress Waheeda Rehman. He passed away tragically on October 10, 1964, at the young age of 39.
