In 2025, acclaimed filmmaker Gurinder Chadha has taken on the challenge of adapting Charles Dickens' classic 'A Christmas Carol' with a unique musical twist. Her new film, 'Christmas Karma', is set to hit theaters this holiday season.
Chadha's version of the story follows Mr. Sood, a miserly businessman in contemporary London who shares Scrooge's loathing of the weak and homeless. Through a series of fantastical scenes, he is confronted by the ghosts of past, present, and future Christmases, much like the original tale. However, Chadha has infused the film with more than a hint of Bollywood, shooting it as a vibrant musical.
The filmmaker explains that it was her own children who inspired her to persist in getting this project made, despite the darker themes explored. Chadha is known for her ability to blend cultures, and 'Christmas Karma' is no exception, offering a fresh take on the timeless Dickens story.
