Guneet Monga Kapoor, a prominent Indian producer, is strategically expanding her film ventures beyond traditional dramas, aiming for genre cinema and women-led franchises. Her organization, Women in Film India, established just a year ago, has rapidly grown to 3,500 members, offering skill development and bridging into international markets. The initiative, supported by Jio Studios and Rareism, received over 200 applications for four scholarship spots at the Cannes Film Market.
Monga Kapoor's personal production slate includes the comedy thriller 'Udta Teer,' set for release on September 11. Additionally, a Tamil-language film, financed outright under a Jio Studios deal, is in post-production with a score by Ilaiyaraaja. The producer is also developing 'Kill 2' and aims to begin production on three films within the current year.
This shift towards genre films, including a natural disaster movie and a slasher, is driven by evolving market dynamics. With reduced streamer acquisition spending and theatrical audiences favoring franchise content, Monga Kapoor sees genre as a viable commercial path. Her long-term ambition includes building women-led franchises that extend into gaming and virtual production, areas she is actively exploring.
Monga Kapoor remains ambitious, aspiring to return to Cannes and compete for the Palme d'Or. Her past credits include critically acclaimed films like 'Peddlers,' 'The Lunchbox,' and 'Masaan,' screened at Cannes in previous years. She expresses confidence in her ambition and willingness to pursue it.
