David Gilmour's legendary "Black Strat" guitar achieved a record-breaking sale of $12.1 million during Christie's auction of The Jim Irsay Collection. This Thursday sale surpassed the $6 million paid in 2020 for Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged guitar, establishing a new benchmark for a sold instrument.
The "Black Strat" was integral to the creation of Pink Floyd's seminal albums, including "The Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall." Gilmour utilized the guitar for iconic tracks like "Money" and "Comfortably Numb."
Further underscoring the collection's significance, Jerry Garcia's custom-made "Tiger" guitar commanded a sale price of $10 million. Used by Garcia from 1979 to 1989, it was played during his final Grateful Dead performance.
Christie's The Jim Irsay Collection, featuring an extensive array of popular culture memorabilia, runs through March 17. Irsay had previously acquired the "Black Strat" in 2019 for $5.245 million, which itself was a record at the time. A portion of the proceeds will benefit philanthropic causes.
