Stuermer, who first joined Collins' band in 1978, has been a constant presence in the singer's musical journey, playing on every one of his albums and tours, except for Collins' 1993 non-collaborative album "Both Sides".
Stuermer, who was initially recruited by Genesis to replace guitarist Steve Hackett, quickly forged a strong musical bond with Collins. The two artists shared a similar sensibility, and when Collins embarked on his solo career, Stuermer became his trusted sideman. "I didn't know that my relationship with him was going to start in 1978 and pretty much go until 2022," Stuermer reflects. "It's almost like being a member of a family."
Stuermer's contributions can be heard on many of Collins' most iconic hits, including "One More Night" and "Don't Lose My Number" from the acclaimed album "No Jacket Required". The guitarist also shares behind-the-scenes stories about the creation of other classics, such as "In the Air Tonight" and "You Can't Hurry Love", revealing the collaborative process and Collins' unique approach to songwriting.
Despite Collins' recent health issues, Stuermer remains effusive about his old friend, describing him as a "force that couldn't be reckoned with" during his creative peak. The guitarist's kinetic playing and experimental approach have undoubtedly left an indelible mark on Collins' musical legacy.
