Guitar Center Reveals Most Overplayed Songs
4 May
Summary
- Master of Puppets is Guitar Center's most overplayed song.
- Nirvana and Metallica each had two songs on the list.
- Tool and John Mayer songs were surprising additions.

Guitar Center's CEO, Gabe Dalporto, initiated a survey among store leaders to identify the most overplayed songs heard in their locations. The results revealed "Master of Puppets" by Metallica as the most frequently played track, surpassing even the iconic "Stairway to Heaven." Other top songs included "Sweet Child O' Mine," "Seven Nation Army," and "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
Metallica and Nirvana were the only artists with multiple songs on the list, featuring "Enter Sandman" and "Come As You Are" respectively. Surprising inclusions were Tool's "Schism" and John Mayer's "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room," which stood out on a list otherwise skewed towards hard rock. Dalporto expressed surprise at the absence of Jimi Hendrix and Pearl Jam.
The survey's inspiration partly stemmed from a previous, unofficial ban on "Stairway to Heaven" in Guitar Center stores, a policy that was eventually lifted. Dalporto acknowledged the challenges store employees face hearing repetitive music but also highlighted how the store's atmosphere can foster spontaneous, cohesive musical moments when customers collaborate on playing these popular tunes.
