Ritchie's 'In the Grey' Suffers Disastrous Debut
17 May
Summary
- Film earned only $1.1 million on its opening day.
- It debuted at #6, missing the domestic top 5.
- Predicted to barely cross $3 million for the weekend.

Guy Ritchie's latest film, "In the Grey," featuring Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal, has experienced a significantly poor opening in North America. The movie generated only $1.1 million on its first day in theaters, consequently placing it at sixth position and outside the top five domestic releases. Analysts anticipate the film will be fortunate to exceed $3 million over its initial three-day weekend.
This underperformance marks another box-office disappointment for the collaboration between director Guy Ritchie and star Henry Cavill. Their previous film, "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare," also failed to meet expectations. "In the Grey" was initially slated for a 2025 release by Lionsgate, but production issues and previous directorial track record led the distributor to return the rights to Black Bear.
The action film, which follows elite operatives on a high-stakes mission, opened in 2,018 theaters. Despite its star-studded cast, "In the Grey" is expected to be overshadowed by major releases like "The Fall Guy" and "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."
