In a remarkable promotional event, Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong delivered a surprise mini-concert from the roof of an ice cream truck on Friday, July 24, 2026. This unique performance took place in San Diego's Gallagher Square, outside Petco Park, to generate buzz for the band's forthcoming road trip comedy, Nimrods.
Armstrong initially performed an acoustic rendition of the band's 1994 hit "Basket Case." He was subsequently joined by fellow band members Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool. The trio then distributed T-shirts, cassettes, and ice cream from within the movie-themed truck to enthusiastic fans.
The film Nimrods, which features Green Day, follows three teenagers on a cross-country journey believing they have secured an opening gig for the band. The movie's cast, including Jenna Fischer and Mason Thames, along with director Lee Kirk, were also present at the promotional event.
Nimrods, formerly titled New Year's Rev, premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. It is scheduled for a U.S. release on August 14, 2026. The accompanying soundtrack, featuring Green Day classics and new material, is set for release on July 31, 2026.
