Vicar Murder Mystery: Faith Tested in 'Grantchester'
11 Jun
Summary
- Vicars become murder suspects during a weekend retreat.
- A new character, John Planer, joins the gathering.
- Alphy grapples with his faith amid the investigation.

Grantchester is set to feature a murder mystery where vicars attending a retreat become suspects. This episode, inspired by an Oscar-nominated film, sees Alphy confronting a crisis of faith as a man is found dead clutching a Bible.
Nicholas Ralph, known for 'All Creatures Great and Small,' guest stars as John Planer, a vicar recently returned from Africa. He joins a gathering of clergymen at Bishop Grey's home, where Alphy also encounters Meg, his love interest from the previous season.
As detectives investigate the death, Alphy's realization that some of his fellow vicars are deceptive complicates his spiritual struggle. The showrunner described the inspiration as wanting to explore what happens when religious men are brought together, aiming for a more humorous take than the film.
The season premiere of Grantchester is scheduled for Sunday, June 14, at 8/7c on PBS.
